פירוש בעל ה’זרע שמשון’ על משנת ארבע מדות בהולכי לבית המדרש

ע”פ רוב אני לא מעיין בעלוני “זרע שמשון”, כיון שהדברים על דרך פלפול רחוק (כנהוג בימיו). אבל לאחרונה ראיתי פירוש אמתי על פרקי אבות, והייתי חייב לשתף אתכם.

תנן (אבות ה’ י”ד):

ארבע מדות בהולכי לבית המדרש. הולך ואינו עושה, שכר הליכה בידו. עושה ואינו הולך, שכר מעשה בידו. הולך ועושה, חסיד. לא הולך ולא עושה, רשע.

והמחבר מקשה:

הן רבים עתה עם הארץ בעוונות הרבים, שאינם הולכים ואינם עושים, ואין סברא לומר שיהיו כולם נקראים רשעים כל שאינם עוברים עבירות, ואיך פסיק ותני בסיפא לא הולך ולא עושה רשע. ועוד דהפך הרשע שייך לומר הולך ועושה צדיק, ולא חסיד. ועוד דסיפא לא אהדר לרישא, דתני ארבע מדות בהולכי, וזה אינו הולך, וקשה נמי אמצעיתא.

My Official Opinion of the Iran Deal

What? How should I know?!

Like everyone else, I didn’t read it (it’s probably too long, anyway).

Sure, I know the platitudes:

  • Israel’s hankering for protection from Uncle Mitzrayim is a Chillul Hashem and an awful strategy. (Feiglin)
  • People do what is in their perceived interest, including political people.
  • Neocons are XYZ.
  • Many people are antisemitic (and definitely think Israel = Jews).
  • Hashem controls לב מלכים ושרים (the elite).
  • And so on and so forth.

But to think thoroughly ignorant third parties know which treaty is likely best for whom when – especially without access to most facts – is presumptuous arrogance.

Actually, the fact countless people do have an opinion tells me how to view their views on other questions…

Enough said.

Will Rogers: What to Be Thankful For

  • Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.
  • Papers say: “Congress is deadlocked and can’t act.” I think that is the greatest blessing that could befall this country.
  • The more you read and observe about this Politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that’s out always looks the best.
  • This country has gotten where it is in spite of politics, not by the aid of it. That we have carried as much political bunk as we have and still survived shows we are a super nation.
  • There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.
  • I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.
