How To REALLY Read Halacha Seforim: Just Read the Main Text

Did you ever notice how Rabbi Shmuel Wosner is quoted by both opponents and supporters of women’s wigs? (And there are other examples.)

There’s a series called “Yeshuos Cohen” written by a Chazon Ish \ R’ Chaim Greineman follower on some of Shas. You can find it on HebrewBooks.

I once read the sefer’s chapters on the sugya of Peah Nochris On the one hand, he permitted using this head-“covering”. Yet, what choice did he have, given the community he associated himself with?!

So, I remarked to someone who knew the author, with such friends, who needed enemies. If one actually reads the analysis, one can tell where the author’s sympathies actually lie, that is to forbid.

And I heard back. When the author heard what I said, he laughed and agreed.

Don’t Be So Quick to Donate Books to the Kosel!

I was recently there and I can testify the illiterates they pay to discard the Genizah were not only throwing away perfectly good books people pay money for, with open shelf space yet available, they even got rid of their very own siddurim, with the ownership stamp!

Not to mention, who knows if they handle Genizah the way they should…

A word to the wise.

re: On Wearing a Kippah or Yarmulke

A recent article wondered:

Since the point is to show observance, but each type of Kippah actually demonstrates the specific types of sins one terms holy, how does it even help to wear one?

One reader thought the point of the above piece is one need not cover one’s head. Another reader pointed out there are other, more straightforward, justifications for covering one’s head (Rambam, Gra), and that it is an act of piety, anyway.

Give me a little credit here! Yes, there is more to it than that, and no, I’m not writing against skullcaps.

Among observant Jews, it is common to hear this specific reason, so I latched on to it, to make two points.

  1. We all need to do Teshuvah, including for group-sins.
  2. “Those living in glass houses”, etc. So, don’t be so proud of your in-group dress style.
