The Satmar Rebbe once offered a petitioner an apple. The man declined: “I’m not hungry” (innocently missing the point of the offer). The Rebbe remarked: A Chassid you will surely never be!” Rabbi Aaron Kotler, nearby, quickly interjected: “Say Amen to the Bracha!”

This story was told to me by someone who heard it from Rabbi Yisrael Meir Wallace.

(I don’t know if he said this loudly enough for the Rebbe to hear.)

מדינת ישראל ניסתה לבנות זהות ישראלית חדשה המנותקת מזהויות קודמות. רצינו להיות עם ככול העמים ולכן המצאנו את הישראליות. לא כנדבך נוסף על גב היהדות אלא כזהות חדשה. אם רק יהודי יכול היה להיות ישראלי אז לא בנינו שום זהות חדשה. בסך הכל קיבלנו את אותה גברת יהודית, בשינוי אדרת מדינית. אבל אם אנחנו רוצים ישראליות חדשה, כזו שלא תלויה ביהדות – אז אנחנו חייבים את הערבים. כי הם המיעוט האתני הלא יהודי הגדול במדינה. ואם הם לא יכולים להיות ישראלים אז הניסיון בבניית זהות ישראלית חדשה – נכשל. רק יהודים יכולים להיות ישראלים. ובמשפט אחד פשוט – הישראלי צריך את הערבי כדי לשכוח שהוא יהודי.
