היום: מסע בעקבות הסנהדרין והתכלת‎‎

ביום חמישי כ”ח אב (25 באוגוסט למניינם) נצא למסע בעקבות הסנהדרין והתכלת.

נצא מגן הסנהדרין בירושלים בשעה תשע. ניסע לאושא, עירו של רבן שמעון בן גמליאל ובית דינו. הארכיאולוג החופר במקום יפתח את האתר במיוחד בשבילנו, ויאפשר לנו להציץ בעירם של הסנהדרין, ההולכת ונחשפת בימים אלו. נוכל לראות את חיי היומיום של רבן שמעון בן גמליאל, ר’ נתן ור’ מאיר, ואת הלכות הטהרה והעירוב שנהגו בזמנם. ננסה לסייע לארכיאולוג בחיפוש אחר מקום מושבם של הסנהדרין עצמם, ואולי נזכה להיות אלו שמצאו אותו.
משם נמשיך לציפורי, עירו של ר’ יהודה הנשיא ובית דינו. בה אולי נתחברו המשנה והתלמוד הירושלמי. נתפלל בבית הכנסת הקדום ששימש את חכמינו, נראה את בתיהם ואת חייהם, ונעלה לקבריהם.
לאחר מכן ניסע לחוף התכלת הסמוך לחוף צביה ולחוף דור, שם צדו ועיבדו בני זבולון את חלזון התכלת. ככל הנראה יצטרף אלינו דייג תכלת בן ימינו, יצוד למעננו מספר חלזונות תכלת ויסביר לנו על מאפייניהם.
ניתן לשכשך רגליים בחוף, אך אין זה חוף מוכרז.
אם יהיה לנו זמן, נקפוץ גם למעיין אלרואי הסמוך למקום.
נחזור לירושלים בשעה תשע.

Against Excessive ‘Malchus Shel Chessed’ Rhetoric

Quoting the end of chap. 2, “Sport” of “You Gentiles” by Maurice Samuel):

… I shall be reminded that wherever war was declared we Jews have responded as readily and as eagerly as you gentiles. Statistics (which are quite reliable in such rule-of-thumb matters) bear this out. But I do not believe that we did so from motives that resembled yours. Many reasons compelled us. We are everywhere, to a large extent, aliens. A sense of inferiority in status drives us to extremes of sacrifice in justifying our claims to equality. More than that: we Jews are so frequently and so vigorously reminded, in all constitutionally governed and liberal countries, that we ought to be grateful for permission to live there, that we develop a gratitude which is not only disproportionate but occasionally grotesque. Our children, in schools and elsewhere, are taught, year in, year out, to contrast their present freedom and equality of opportunity with the oppression and bitterness which was the lot of their parents elsewhere. Frequently the contrast, as painted in their imagination, is not a duplicate of the reality. However this may be, these incessant and vehement reminders produce their effect. The child almost comes to believe that it was for the especial benefit of oppressed foreigners that America became a “free country” and, instead of accepting American forms of government level-headedly, with the proper degree of appreciation and criticism, he develops a suppressed hysteria of gratitude. This is not a healthy and natural feeling. Children should not be made to feel such things. And if it comes to the matter of contributions to liberty, we Jews have done as much for the enfranchisement of man as any other people. But the Jew, the oppressed par excellence, begins to look upon America’s liberty as a personal favor. No wonder then that Jews will rush to fight for America. Yet, despite the contradiction of figures there is still a strong impression abroad that the Jews”failed in their duty,” were “slackers.” This feeling rises from an instinctive appreciation of that difference between us. We Jews don’t like fighting. You gentiles do. Moreover, because you like fighting, you are much more skilful than we in hiding occasional reluctance to fight. Indeed, it is obvious that the more fearful you are of taking a hand in the combat, the more you will glorify and idealize it: while the Jew who is afraid adds actual and overt dislike to his cowardice.

An Israeli Soldier’s Story – Eran Efrati

The talk by Eran Efrati was filmed in Denver, Colorado on March 3, 2014 as part of The Soldier and the Refusenik U.S. tour with Maya Wind. Eran talk about his experiences in the IDF and then more broadly discusses Israel, its relationship to the U.S. and the global expansion of militarism.

Eran Efrati, 28, was born and raised in Jerusalem. After graduating high school he enlisted in the IDF, where he served as a combat soldier and company sergeant in Battalion 50 of the Nachal Division. He spent most of his service in Hebron and throughout the West Bank. In 2009, he was discharged and joined Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the daily reality in the Occupied Territories. He worked as the chief investigator of the organization, collecting testimonies from IDF soldiers about their activities. He also guided political tours and to the West Bank and worked to educate Israeli youth about the reality of being a soldier in an occupying army. His collected testimonies appear in the booklet “Operation Cast Lead” and their most recent release “Our Harsh Logic”. Since leaving Breaking the Silence, his investigative reports appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. Today he is active with the Israeli groups Anarchists Against the Wall and Boycott from Within.

ישוב ‘דרך אמונה’: שוברים את האפרטהייד נגד יהודים בארה”ק

מאחז חרדי בגוש עציון: על שם מרן שר התורה

מאחז חרדי בגוש עציון: 11 משפחות הקימו אתמול מבני עץ באזור היישוב מיצד. המאחז החדש נקרא “דרך אמונה” – על שם מרן שר התורה הגר”ח קניבסקי

במקום שנקרא ‘דרך אמונה’ על שם מרן שר התורה הגר”ח קניבסקי זצ”ל הוקמו כ-15 מבנים וכן בית כנסת מאולתר וישיבת בין הזמנים לבחורים.

מדובר בפעם הראשונה שבה משפחות חרדיות לכל דבר עולות לנקודת התיישבות לא חוקית מתוך כוונה להצטרף למפעל ההתיישבות.

משה דוד רכז המאחז אמר: “הישוב דרך אמונה הוקם ביום ראשון בחצות על ידי משפחות אברכים חרדיות ועל ידי בחורי ישיבות שהתנדבו על מנת לחבר את בני הציבור החרדי לארץ ישראל וכמחאה על מדיניות האפרטהייד שעושה איפה ואיפה נגד יהודים בנושא הבניה ביו”ש. ברוך השם יש הענות רחבה מצד הציבור החרדי שמפתיעה את כל הפעילים כנראה שנושא יישוב הארץ בער בציבור מתחת לפני השטח ואנחנו רק היינו הטריגר”.

ח”כ שמחה רוטמן מסיעת הציונות הדתית בירך על הקמת המאחז החדש: ”מצוות יישוב ארץ ישראל, מדהים לראות את העוצמות של החבר’ה האלו. עלה נעלה וירשנו אותה”.
