See the following great essay by Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch. The question is just as fresh today: Torah or Modernity? In some circles, “modern” is synonymous with “impious”. But this is a false dichotomy! We subjugate the world and all newly discovered powers thereof to God. Technology must be used to enable religion. We must continually improve our Mitzvah observance based on new wisdom and better science.

Asking for counsel is one thing, but arrogating prophetic legal authority to a “chacham” (scholar) is another.

I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to relate to scholars whose only surviving words are written in the impersonal, judicial or exegetical voice. And if I can’t relate I cannot hope to emulate.
