A Small Thing That Impressed Me About Rabbi Meir Mazuz zal

What did Rabbi Mazuz do when he or a family member was ill? You might expect someone of his sophistication and broad knowledge to have all kinds of interesting ideas and segulos, but no. The rabbi related on a few occasions that he would recite Sefer Tehillim, trying to complete it once or twice, sitting for hours in the empty hospital synagogue. No studying commentaries, no special order or anything else, just reading Tehillim for the sake of reading. I think I recall him implying he didn’t aim for a respectfully deliberate pace, or kavanah (one can only picture how the “simple meaning of the words” would slow him down considerably, if not worse).

Again, Rabbi Mazuz did exactly what any other vulnerable Jew would do: recite Tehillim. And when Hashem granted him medical salvations, he attributed this to “Chessed Chinam“, nothing but.

May we merit to follow in his footsteps!
