Ever heard of the Black soldiers for the US Army during WWII? While they were demeaned and often treated worse than German POWs, while doing their best, their families were segregated and discriminated against.

Ever heard of Hitler’s half-Jewish soldiers (Mischlinge)? While they were busy heiling and protecting the Nazi regime (often in dangerous and degrading positions), their relatives were being gassed to death. And they, too, were gradually sent to the camps.

Ever heard of the sad statist “National-Religious”? While they are being killed in outsized numbers as cannon fodder for a fool’s errand in Operation Swords of Irony, their own settler families are being thrown out of their rightful homes, so the Arab enemy can continue taking over the country (also see this).

It wouldn’t surprise me if even such “service” was deemed too great a privilege and the suckers were kicked out of even the Israeli army. The evil regime doesn’t care about military victory anywhere near as much as physical\religious Shemad (same as Hitler).

Rashi has difficulty with the word “ki” and explains it as “im ki” (although). But the Targum says “arei – because”.

I heard a good, alternative explanation (don’t recall the source).

The verse means Yaakov didn’t want his actions to be obvious”because” Menashe was the firstborn. Why should the Bechor be made to feel inferior by being pushed leftward? But once Yosef spoke up, the sleight of hands was revealed even to those bowing their heads, so Yaakov had no choice but to give a little speech (again showing kind consideration to Menashe, saying גם הוא יהיה לעם וגם הוא יגדל).

If you read the pesukim, I think you will find this all fits very well.
