Chazon Ish: Know the Enemy!

The Dirshu weekly of Bamidbar-Shavuos, quoting Rabbi Aryeh Shechter (Haggadah Shel Pesach “Aryeh Sha’ag”):
לפני חמישים שנה סיפר לי מרן הגר”ח קניבסקי שליט”א, שמרן ה’חזון איש’ זצוק”ל אמר לו כדברים הבאים: “יש חבל ארוך, בצדו האחד אוחז בן גוריון ובצדו השני אוחז אנוכי. בן גוריון מנסה למשוך את כל עם ישראל אליו, ואני מנסה למשוך את כל עם ישראל אלי, פעם הוא גובר ופעם אני גובר…”
Translation: Over fifty years ago, Maran Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky shlita told me the Chazon Ish of blessed memory once said the following: “There is a long rope, so to speak. Ben Gurion grasps one end, while I grasp the other. Ben Gurion attempts to draw the entire Jewish nation in his direction, and I attempt to draw the entire Jewish nation in my direction, instead. Sometimes he overcomes; sometimes I overcome…”

‘Yeridas Hadoros’ Is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy!

What is “Yeridas Hadoros”? The doctrine that the “world is running down”, Jewishly speaking (literally, “the generations’ decline”). But the awareness of Yeridas Hadoros itself causes this to be the case, more than would otherwise be the case.

Here’s Wikipedia on the “Golem Effect“:

The Golem effect is a psychological phenomenon in which lower expectations placed upon individuals either by supervisors or the individual themselves lead to poorer performance by the individual. This effect is mostly seen and studied in educational and organizational environments. It is a form of self-fulfilling prophecy.

In reality, YH is just a copout for not observing the Torah too well (as though many previous generations couldn’t have made the same excuse!).

Instead, we must do all we can, as though YH were untrue, and, endless lectures to the contrary notwithstanding, deemphasize the point.
