Will our ears never rest of hearing Koheles Rabah 7:19?
בשעה שברא הקב”ה את אדם הראשון נטלו והחזירו על כל אילני גן עדן ואמר לו, ראה מעשי כמה נאים ומשובחין הן, וכל מה שבראתי בשבילך בראתי. תן דעתך שלא תקלקל ותחריב את עולמי, שאם קלקלת אין מי שיתקן אחריך, ולא עוד, שאת גורם מיתה לאותו צדיק.
Right, well, Chazal actually meant to care for the religious “environment”, that is, to keep mitzvos, so the world is worthy of existing, not newfangled nonsense. So, this is a non sequitur.
But wait!
Since the sort of anti-capitalist tyranny environmentalists endorse negates countless mitzvos (stealing and killing, for starters), the Medrash does refer to preserving our world, after all (from socialism, anyway!).
Maybe that’s what they mean…
