A Reader Comments: ‘Arab’ Means Tribe, Not Country!

In reference to the piece ‘From the River to the Sea’ Is Against ASHKENAZI JEWS! we received the following comment:

European Jews and “Arab Jews” – not quite the same thing. Europe is a continent – Jews living there are European due to their physical residence, nothing more. Just as Jews living in Canada or the US are North American. Arab, however, is an ethnicity – very distinct from the Jewish ethnicity. Similarly, Jews who lived in Kurdistan were not actually Kurds and Jews who lived in Iran were not actually Persian. I am well aware they are called “Kurdish Jews” and “Persian  Jews”, but that is a convenient shorthand, just as accurate as me being called an “Anglo” in Israel as if I am tribally associated with the actual Anglo-Saxons. The world is tribal – the Middle East even more so – and Jews are our own tribe. A Kurd is never an “Arab Kurd” even when he is an Arabic-speaking Kurd and Arabic speakers in Iran are not “Arab Persians”. By the same token, Jews are not Kurdish, Persian, Russian, Yemeni or Ethiopian – we may come from those places and adopt some cultural markers, but you can’t stop being a Member of the Tribe.
