CONTRA Compromise: A Response to Rabbi Oratz [Part 2]

[Find Rabbi Oratz’s letter in Part One here…]

Dear Rabbi Yitzchok Oratz,

Thank you for both taking the survey and then engaging with the manifesto itself.

Now, even if you are right, the specific calculation by Aaron (אם יהרג) seems to be davka, as Rashi says that this caused the Churban. Other benefit-loss calculations don’t rise to the same level, but see below. And those who claim to follow Aaron’s example in protecting the Jewish people (and not as a whole!), ultimately do so in a spirit of selfishness or worse. Not to mention the results.

But while I haven’t learned this in depth as you may have done, it seems to me even those Rishonim being doresh leshvach don’t mean Aaron’s entire action should therefore be emulated, but that his thought process was partially praiseworthy (and should be applied where applicable). After all, the Torah says “ובאהרן התאנף ד’ מאד להשמידו”. See also Rashi in a few places, such as Vayikra 9:2 קח לך עגל, להודיע שמכפר לו הקב”ה ע”י עגל זה על מעשה העגל.

Strictly speaking, “Mitzvas Peshara” has a recognized meaning in Hebrew. It stems from the discussion Sanhedrin there if Peshara in monetary matters is reshus or mitzva (and the Shulchan Aruch C.M. 12:2 rules like the latter view). Even if we go beyond accepted usage, Tosafos and Ran don’t use the word “Peshara” to refer to Aaron’s action (unlike Rashi), while Rashi wouldn’t append the word “Mitzva”, of course.

There are similar cases throughout Chazal of sin mitigation; this doesn’t imply no sin. For example, the Torah gives place to Shimon and Levi’s reason for destroying Shechem, Chazal say Peninah intended Leshem Shamayim, explain why Reuven moved the bed, much on Mei Meriva, and on and on. And yet: Peninah’s children died, Shimon and Levi were cursed, Reuven lost out, etc., etc.

As I wrote once before:

The very greatness of the individuals amplifies the lesson we cannot rely on ourselves and must be forever vigilant and precede prayer to escape the evil inclination.

And we cannot relate to angels, so we cannot learn anything at all from them if they are “angels”, and us “donkey” shadows.

No matter how much the sin is “explained” (the person had good intentions, etc.), even if this is the case, there must still be some degree of sinfulness remaining, otherwise, why is it mentioned against them, and/or why were they punished? (And don’t we, too, often have good intentions? Except, we are partially deceiving ourselves beneath the ingenious justifications, the same way they did.)

See the rest over here…

If you read the manifesto with care, you will notice the words “maybe”, “perhaps”; a pointed refusal to accompany the reader past “the gates”. There’s a reason for that. Sure, “compromise” is a Shas sugya, and in truth evades full explication in writing, but we can’t let internal “Observant” Reformers get their way!

Rather, “בהדי כבשי דרחמנא למה לך”, never, ever sin or assist sinning at all or even allow that impression to form, even for what might appear to be the best of religious reasons (especially in the minds of current generations). And yet I am unsure Rabbi Elyashiv’s position must follow (I didn’t get far yet in your Chaburah).

Thank you for writing!

Naava Kodesh Receives Yeshivish Olim in the Airport!

Wave of Yeshivish Aliyah Welcomed At Ben Gurion Airport

July 14, 2025

A powerful moment unfolded at Ben Gurion Airport this week as volunteers from Naava Kodesh warmly welcomed a group of Yeshivish families making Aliyah to Eretz Yisroel. Among the arrivals was a family from Lakewood, New Jersey — a sign of the growing trend among Bnei Torah families to establish permanent homes in Eretz Yisroel.

What was once considered rare is becoming increasingly familiar: Yeshivish families, grounded in Torah values and chinuch, are arriving with a sense of clarity and purpose, fulfilling a generations-old yearning to settle in Eretz Yisroel.

As the families emerged from customs, they were greeted with singing and heartfelt dancing, including a moving outpour of “Veshavu Banim Ligvulam.” The scene reflected the joy of return and the depth of what this moment represents: the culmination of centuries of tefillos, longing, and mesirus nefesh to settle in Eretz Yisroel.

“This wasn’t just another flight — it was the fulfillment of 2,000 years of yearning,” said Yosef Elyah Steinberg, a member of the Naava Kodesh Welcoming Committee.

“Watching choshuveh Yeshiva families arrive with that spark in their eyes, realizing that people like them were waiting to welcome them — it was deeply moving. It felt like a glimpse of Hashem’s light after years of galus, and a reminder that this is just the beginning. Their courage inspires others to consider their own journey home.”

Shmuel Shifrin, a fellow committee member and former Lakewood resident who made Aliyah two years ago, echoed the sentiment:

“Standing at the airport today, I had the incredible zechus to welcome Yidden finally coming home. I didn’t know most of their names — but it felt like greeting close family returning after years apart.

The energy was emotional, powerful, and unforgettable. Moments like this remind me that the geulah is unfolding before our eyes — one beautiful family at a time.”

“Welcoming these choshuveh families from Lakewood to Eretz Yisroel is nothing short of a historic moment,” said Tzvi Arnstein, Founder of Naava Kodesh.

“Seeing Bnei Torah settling in the Holy Land is a tremendous chizuk — not only for them, but for all of Klal Yisroel. At Naava Kodesh, we consider it a zechus to assist these families as they begin this next stage in their avodas Hashem, rooted in the kedusha of Eretz Hakodesh. We’re here to help make that transition smooth and uplifting — both b’gashmiyus and b’ruchniyus.”

As more families explore the possibility of Aliyah, Naava Kodesh continues to be a vital resource — offering individualized guidance, school support, chinuch consultations, community recommendations, pilot trip planning, and a trusted network of mentors who have already made the journey themselves.

Serendipity: How the Plastic Tax Set Back the Environmentalist Cult Among Charedim!

Quoting JPost:

The Health Ministry in Jerusalem – run by the ultra-Orthodox party Shas – persuaded the Netanyahu government to cancel a tax on single-use plastics not because it would cause a significant financial burden on the community but because haredi Israelis felt they were being “politically victimized.”

This was so even though ministry professionals had been working for years on the move because plastics cause harm to the environment and the whole country.

A newly published Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI) study found that the well-meaning environmental tax turned into a cultural flashpoint. The 2021 tax on disposable plastics – widely used by haredim with large families and in many family celebrations, made easier by throw-away utensils, plates, and the like – caused a sharp and lasting decline in climate support among the ultra-Orthodox community. It was driven by a deep sense of political victimization – not a financial burden – as many saw the tax as an attack on their way of life. Even years after the tax was repealed, the damage to environmental trust still lingers, the researchers declared.

“These findings are both fascinating and concerning,” Bloy said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post. “Our data show that when environmental policies are perceived as punitive or politically charged, they can provoke a backlash that undermines long-term climate goals – even after the policy itself is revoked.”

Needless to say, the timing, the politicians who introduced the anti-human “law” and their previous records, the devilish details, and the surrounding rhetoric (context, in short), were all crystal clear in aim. Gaslighting won’t work.
