‘If That’s What Religious Jews Are Like, I Want No Part of It!’

Toldos Yaakov Yosef, Behar 5:

Translation by Claude:

“I created the evil inclination, I created Torah as its remedy” (Kiddushin 30b) — for the Torah is called “water,” as it is written: “Ho, everyone who is thirsty, go to the water” (Isaiah 55:1). This is why the Sages said: “If this vile one [the evil inclination] accosts you, drag it to the house of study; if it is a stone, it will melt” etc. (Kiddushin 30b).

However, according to this, the original difficulty returns regarding the wicked who sin — for surely one can be saved from the evil inclination through Torah and moral instruction! The Talmud answers: “The ox came and drank up the water” [i.e., something intervened to prevent the remedy from working].

For I heard from my teacher, of blessed memory [the Baal Shem Tov], an explanation of the verse: “For what futility have You created all the children of men?” (Psalms 89:48). He explained that the evil inclination asked the Holy One, blessed be He, “For what futility (shav) have You created?” — that is, the evil inclination was asking about itself: why was it created, since it is futility (shav), given that there are masters of moral teaching (chachmei mussar) — who would listen to the evil inclination? The Holy One, blessed be He, answered: “All the children of men etc.” — for there are those who resemble the masters of mussar but are ‘wise in doing evil,’ and one cancels out the other. This is the meaning of “all the children of men” etc. — this is a wondrous and precious explanation.

Similarly, I heard in the name of the late Moharan, of blessed memory [Reb Nachman of Horodenka], [an explanation of the verse]: “Woe to those who call the evil good” (Isaiah 5:20) — and if you ask, where is the harm in that? On the contrary, [let people think the evil ones are good, instead of being corrupted]! To his own question, he then replied: But from this it follows that they also call the good ones evil [when their true nature becomes apparent] — and this too is wondrous and precious.

This then is the meaning of “the ox came” (v’ata tora) — this refers to a Torah scholar (talmid chacham) who is learned in Torah yet is “wise in doing evil.” Through this, “it drank the water” — meaning, people no longer heed the words of the genuine masters of mussar, as explained above.

In addition to this: “the slaughterer came and slaughtered the ox” — this means that this person who is “wise in doing evil” meets his end, but the common people do not know how to distinguish between one sage and the other, and they say ‘all faces are equal.’ This causes the water [of Torah] to no longer extinguish the fire of the evil inclination.

However, we see that “the Angel of Death came and slaughtered the slaughterer who had slaughtered the ox” — if so, the original difficulty returns as before [since the killers of both are punished]! The Talmud resolves this: in truth, this is precisely why the Holy One, blessed be He, will come and slaughter the Angel of Death — understand this well.

Emuna Ubitachon Chazon Ish 4:16:

Translation by Claude:

Among the most significant sources of damage is a teacher of masses who is himself incomplete in good character traits. The flawed educator causes harm in multiple ways: on one hand, he does not know the teachings of mussar and does not know what to be careful about, and he causes others to stumble through conduct that is, by the standards of ethical teaching, debased — without even being aware of it. And even if his explicit lessons are good and sound, since his ‘inner self does not match his outer presentation,’ his words do not enter the heart of the student. Moreover, the student learns more from his teacher’s actions than from his lessons.

The relationship between any teacher and his students demands elevated qualities and refined character traits. And when this one rebukes his student with coarse language and angry shouting over some wrong the student has done, good and bad become entangled: if there is benefit to the admonition and the student is aroused regarding his sin and resolves in his heart not to repeat it, there is nevertheless something harmful here — the student becomes accustomed to the coarseness and harshness that he absorbs from his teacher, whom he sees employing these ugly behaviors in the moment of rebuke. And “shimush” [i.e., observing and absorbing from] a teacher is ‘greater than formal study.’ The student always imitates his teachers; moreover, the rebuke itself is usually flawed when bad character traits accompany it.

When the student remains under a flawed educator, he will continually inherit bad character traits from that educator. And since the educator considers himself a complete person, the very embodiment of good qualities, all the disgraceful things he does are done with pride and contempt — his student too becomes habituated through his distortions to commit abominations under a veneer of elevated purity. This educator will be fruitful and multiply, producing offspring in his likeness and in his image.

And when the educator is empty of Torah wisdom, only acquired through toil in halacha, he stumbles via obstacles in his shadowy opposition to the halachic authority, he inherits and then bequeaths to his students as well the fruit of his sin.

Corona Vaccine Terror Sets a Precedent

Episode 392 – The Future of Vaccines

 • 12/23/2020

If the Gateses and the Faucis and the representatives of the international medical establishment get their way, life will not return to normal until the entire planet is vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. What many do not yet understand, however, is that the vaccines that are being developed for SARS-Cov-2 are unlike any vaccines that have ever been used on the human population before. And, as radically different as these vaccines appear, they represent only the very beginning of a complete transformation of vaccine technology that is currently taking place in research labs across the planet. This is a study of The Future of Vaccines.

How To Survive the Platform Purges

Check out what Mises.org is doing:

We want all of you, fans and supporters of the Mises Institute, to know we are well positioned to survive purges by platforms and hosts. Without giving too much detail, here are the basics:

  • We maintain and own (not rent) internal servers and backup servers, while also maintaining storage offshore;
  • We are moving to a very local internet service provider (ISP) with beefy broadband;
  • We have alternative domain registration providers in place to protect the use of mises.org;
  • We have “hot standby” sites in two foreign jurisdictions in case of a denial by our web host;
  • We have all video, audio, and graphic content housed on our backup servers in case of a denial by our cloud provider;
  • We sync and mirror all YouTube videos on alternative platforms, including Odysee (started by a Mises Institute fan);
  • We have registered the Mises Institute name with every new or alternative social media possible, with the expectation that Facebook and Twitter will remove us eventually. Fortunately, in one sense, only about 20 percent of our site traffic arrives via social media click-through (which is not the case for many newer sites). Also, less than half of mises.org traffic arrives via organic Google search. So while we would hate to lose views if Google “disappeared” our search results, enough people come to mises.org directly through their browsers or from subscription emails;
  • We have moved away from using shared internal Google docs;
  • We have moved toward encrypted email vendors;
  • We keep strict security over our donor database and back it up frequently using internal storage;
  • We moved our email/subscription lists to an alternative vendor after reading accounts of Mailchimp reviewing user content; and
  • We have taken steps to maintain alternative payment gateways and diversify our banking providers locally, nationally, and internationally.

As for Hyehudi, well, we have fewer visitors…
