המתימטיקה (π) של המעגל בחז”ל

ראשי פרקים: א. סוכה העשויה ככבשן. ב. הזורק כוורת לרשות הרבים. ג. חלון עגול. ד. עמוד עגול המאהיל על הטומאה. ה. קורת מבוי. ו. קורה המאהילה על הטומאה. ז. ים של שלמה. ח. ספר תורה בארון. המאמר פורסם בקובץ תחומין כרך יט ע’ 456 במקומות שבהם עסקו חז”ל במעגלים או בגופים עגולים, נוקטים הם ביחס של 1:3 בין היקפו של המעגל לבין קוטרו. אולם כבר הראשונים ידעו שהיחס במציאות הוא יחס של אחד לשלש ושביעית. ליתר דיוק ההיקף הוא פי 3.14286 מהקוטר, מספר זה מסומן במתטמטיקה באות π. קיימים מספר נסיונות להסביר את אי הדיוק. במאמר זה נצביע על כך שבסוגיות שונות העוסקות בגופים תלת מימדיים חרוטיים, נדרשת התייחסות אחרת, ולפיה היחס האמיתי של קוטר המעגל להקיפו דהיינו π היה ידוע היטב לחז”ל, ובוטא בדרכם – בהצגת קוטר מסויים כאלכסון של ריבוע, והיקף מסויים – באמות או בטפחים.

Yes, the Torah Cares About Reality

Why Archeology is Kosher

I find it frustrating discussing the renewal of Jewish practices, like the wearing of t’cheleth, with those who would seriously posit that halacha does not take Archeology into consideration. This is a fallacious argument, as Archeology is merely a word we coined to describe discovering evidence, whereas to them it represents a system of beliefs, with a sinister Latin name, that must be at heads with Torah methodology.

  • R’Schachter has always pointed out that the Talmud uses archaeological evidence in deciding the law. The Gemara says that although one can acquire whatever is on his property merely by stating a claim, a qinyan hatzer, there is a case where one can enter the domain of another, and unearth a buried treasure and claim it as his own, and the other, the owner of the domain, has no claim, as the antiquity  and location of the treasure indicate that he had no foreknowledge of its presence. To the sages, the circumstances indicate that “the Emorites left it.”

‘Spy’ Is A Dishonorable Profession

When the brothers meet Yosef in Egypt, the word “kenim” is used a lot, as the antonym for “spies”. Like here:

ונאמר אליו כנים אנחנו לא היינו מרגלים

How would you translate the biblical word “kenim”. Honest? Candid? Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, in his famed translation on the Torah, instead renders it the far stronger “honorable”. See the examples from here:

Genesis(42:11)
We are all the sons of the same man. We are honorable men. We would never think of being spies!’
Genesis(42:31)
We said to him, ‘We are honorable men. We have never been spies.
Genesis(42:33)
‘The man who was the lord of the land said to us, ‘I have a way of knowing if you are honorable.
Genesis(42:34)
Bring your youngest brother back to me, and then I will know that you are honorable men, and not spies

Spies are akin to thieves and murderers. Spies are dishonorable!
