דִּבֵּר עִמָּנוּ כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים מֵעִנְיַן יִסּוּרֵי עוֹלָם הַזֶּה, שֶׁכָּל בְּנֵי הָעוֹלָם כֻּלָּם מְלֵאִים יִסּוּרִים, אֵין גַּם אֶחָד שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ עוֹלָם הַזֶּה. וַאֲפִלּוּ הָעֲשִׁירִים הַגְּדוֹלִים וַאֲפִלּוּ הַשָּׂרִים, אֵין לָהֶם שׁוּם עוֹלָם הַזֶּה כְּלָל, כִּי כָל יְמֵיהֶם כַּעַס וּמַכְאוֹבוֹת, וְכֻלָּם מְלֵאִים טְרָדוֹת וּדְאָגוֹת וְעַצְבוּת וְיָגוֹן וַאֲנָחָה תָּמִיד, וְכָל אֶחָד יֵשׁ לוֹ יִסּוּרִים מְיֻחָדִים, וְאֵין גַּם אֶחָד מִכָּל הַגְּבִירִים וְהַשָּׂרִים, שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ הַכֹּל כְּסֵדֶר כִּרְצוֹנוֹ תָּמִיד, וְכֻלָּם כְּאֶחָד מְלֵאִים יִסּוּרִים וּדְאָגוֹת תָּמִיד, וְזֶה בָּרוּר וְיָדוּעַ לְכָל מִי שֶׁבָּקִי קְצָת בָּהֶם וּבְדַרְכֵיהֶם.  

Rebbe Nachman spoke with us a number of times about the pain of this world (olam hazeh), that absolutely everyone in the world is plagued by suffering. There is not a one who has Olam HaZeh. Even the very wealthy and the privileged have no Olam HaZeh at all, because all their days are frustration and grief. They are all full of troubles, worries, misery, sadness and aggravation—always! Each one with his particular woes. And so, of all the rich and the privileged there is not a one for whom everything is always in order and as he would have it. They are all as one constantly full of suffering and worry. This is clear and known to anyone who is somewhat familiar with them and their ways.

וְכַמָּה פְּעָמִים דִּבַּרְנוּ מִזֶּה, וְהָיִינוּ רוֹאִים בְּעֵינֵינוּ כָּל זֹאת. וַאֲפִלּוּ מִי שֶׁנִּדְמֶה עָלָיו, שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה בִּשְׁלֵמוּת וְיֵשׁ לוֹ כָּל הַתַּעֲנוּגִים: עֹשֶׁר וּנְכָסִים וְכָבוֹד וְהוֹן רַב וְאַרְמוֹנִים גְּדוֹלִים וְכֵלִים נִפְלָאִים וְתַכְשִׁיטִין וּסְגֻלַּת מְלָכִים וְכוּ’ – אִם יִסְתַּכְּלוּ בּוֹ הֵיטֵב, הוּא גַּם־כֵּן מָלֵא כַּעַס וּמַכְאוֹבוֹת הַרְבֵּה תָּמִיד בְּכַמָּה מִינֵי אֳפָנִים וְעִנְיָנִים, כַּנִּרְאֶה בְּחוּשׁ, וְאֵין צָרִיךְ לְבָאֵר זֹאת לְמִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ מֹחַ בְּקָדְקֳדוֹ וּמִסְתַּכֵּל קְצָת בָּהֶם בֶּאֱמֶת, וּכְמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר שְׁלֹמֹה הַמֶּלֶךְ עָלָיו הַשָּׁלוֹם (קהלת ב׳:כ״ג): גַּם כָל יָמָיו כַּעַס וּמַכְאוֹבוֹת וְכוּ’, וּכְתִיב: אָדָם לְעָמָל יוּלָד קְצַר יָמִים וּשְׂבַע רֹגֶז (איוב י״ד:א׳). 

 We spoke of this a number of times and would see it all with our eyes. Even someone who seems to have Olam HaZeh completely, with all its pleasures—wealth, possessions, esteem, great riches, enormous palaces, amazing vessels and jewelry, and the resources of kings—if they would look at him closely, [they would see that] he, too, is always full of much frustration and grief in many different ways and matters. This is empirically obvious, and there is no need to explain it to anyone who has a brain in his head and honestly observes them a bit. It is as King Shlomo, of blessed memory, said: “Also all his days [bring] frustration and grief…” (Ecclesiastes 2:23). And it is written: “But a man is born to toil… he is short-lived and sated with anxiety” (Job 5:7 and 14:1).

וְזֶה כּוֹלֵל כָּל בְּנֵי־אָדָם שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם מִקָּטֹן וְעַד גָּדוֹל, כִּי כֻלָּם נוֹלְדוּ לְעָמָל וּמְלֵאִים רֹגֶז וְיִסּוּרִין, וְאֵין שׁוּם עֵצָה וְתַחְבּוּלָה לְהִנָּצֵל מֵעָמָל וְיָגוֹן הַזֶּה כִּי־אִם לִבְרֹחַ לְהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְלַעֲסֹק בַּתּוֹרָה.  

This includes every human being in the world, from the smallest to the greatest, because all are born to toil and so are full of anxiety and suffering. Nor is there any advice or ploy through which to be spared from this toil and sadness, except by fleeing to God and being occupied with Torah.

וּכְמוֹ שֶׁמּוּבָא בַּמִּדְרָשׁ (ב”ר פ’ יג): אָדָם לְעָמָל יוּלָד – אַשְׁרֵי מִי שֶׁעֲמָלוֹ בַּתּוֹרָה, הַיְנוּ מֵאַחַר שֶׁכָּל אָדָם נוֹלָד לְעָמָל, וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהִמָּלֵט מִזֶּה בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן, אֲפִלּוּ אִם יִהְיֶה לוֹ כָּל חֲלָלֵי דְּעָלְמָא, בְּוַדַּאי יִהְיֶה לוֹ עָמָל וְיִסּוּרִין וּדְאָגוֹת הַרְבֵּה, עַל־כֵּן הֶחָכָם עֵינָיו בְּרֹאשׁוֹ – שֶׁיַּהֲפֹךְ הֶעָמָל לְעָמָל שֶׁל תּוֹרָה, אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁבִיל זֶה נוֹלָד שֶׁיַּעֲמֹל בַּתּוֹרָה, וְאָז אַשְׁרֵי לוֹ, כִּי נִצּוֹל מֵעֲמַל הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה וְזוֹכֶה לְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם הַבָּא:  

This is as the Midrash brings: “But a man is born to toil”—fortunate is he whose toil is in Torah (Bereishit Rabbah 13:7). In other words, since every person is born to toil and it cannot possibly be avoided, even if he owns all the riches in the world he will certainly experience much toil, suffering and worries. And so, “a wise man has his eyes ahead of him” (Ecclesiastes 2:14). He turns the toil into the toil of Torah, which is the reason he was born—to toil in Torah. Then, fortunate is he, because he is spared the toil of this world and merits life in the World to Come.

עָנָה וְאָמַר רַבֵּנוּ זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה: הִנֵּה הַכֹּל אוֹמְרִים, שֶׁיֵּשׁ עוֹלָם הַזֶּה וְעוֹלָם הַבָּא. וְהִנֵּה עוֹלָם הַבָּא – אָנוּ מַאֲמִינִים שֶׁיֵּשׁ עוֹלָם הַבָּא, אֶפְשָׁר יֵשׁ גַּם עוֹלָם הַזֶּה גַּם־כֵּן בְּאֵיזֶה עוֹלָם, כִּי בְּכָאן נִרְאֶה שֶׁהוּא הַגֵּיהִנֹּם, כִּי כֻלָּם מְלֵאִים יִסּוּרִים גְּדוֹלִים תָּמִיד. 

The Rebbe, of blessed memory, declared: Look! Everyone says there is this world and the World to Come. Now, we believe there is a World to Come. And it is possible that an Olam HaZeh exists in some universe. But here it looks more like Gehinnom, because everyone is full of great suffering—always!

וְאָמַר: שֶׁאֵין נִמְצָא שׁוּם עוֹלָם הַזֶּה כְּלָל:  

The Rebbe also said: “There is no Olam HaZeh at all!”

Yonatan Bassi: Living Fulfillment of ‘Cruel to the Merciful’

Something I read today brought into clear focus the saying. “He who is merciful to the wicked will be wicked to the merciful”

The late rabbi-general, Avi Ronsky, former chief chaplain of the IDF. was a major authority on Jewish law  and ethics.

In his book, “As arrows in the hands of heroes,”  he discusses halacha and the military and ethical /Torah issues as they pertain to military service in a Jewish army.

In his  book  he publishes  some correspondences with those who differ with some of his halachic decisions and world view.

One that caught my eye  was a letter written to him by Yonatan Bassi.

When these letters were written, Bassi  had just completed his service in Lebanon In the mid eighties as a battalion commander.

He illustrated his views on Jewish  military ethics by the following examples:

He relates that  just before his forces were to attack a hostile town  a car appeared with a seriously wounded civilian.

If he were not rushed to the hospital immediately he would die. Bassi  faced  a dilemma.

He had only one military ambulance for his  force which may very well need it in the coming hours of battle.

This same  ambulance was needed immediately  to save  the life of the enemy civilian. Bassi instructed the ambulance to take the civilian in the hope that it would return  and on time , to be used  for his forces. In his opinion , he chose the moral choice and this was an example of Jewish values.

The second example he gave was when an enemy town was about to be attacked and aircraft were called in to “soften” the enemy’s defensive positions before the ground assault.

The civilians had already been instructed to leave the town and  were gathered on the beach.

Then came  information about a woman who had not yet evacuated.

His forces expected to face stiff opposition. The air support would save  casualties but would  probably kill  the woman civilian. What to do?

The pilots were instructed  at the last minute to abort the mission.

Bassi was proud of his Jewish morality  even though  his forces did sustain significant losses in the assault  bereft of air support.

In an exchange of letters on the subject and these specific incidents, Rabbi Ronsky diametrically disagreed with Bassi’s interpretation of Jewish values and halacha in battle.

The rabbi said these are classic examples of the saying about those who are “merciful to the wicked..”

I would not  have been so intrigued by the discussion had it not been with Yonatan Bassi.

The name immediately rang a bell.

Bassi some years after his merciful missions  for the enemy in Lebanon volunteered to be Ariel Sharon’s ‘Manager of the Evacuation of Gush Katif and the Shomron” in 2005.

His job was to facilitate the expulsion of thousands of Jewish families from their homes and turn that part of Israel over to the terrorists. The heart-rending scenes of ten thousand Jews dragged from their homes fit neatly into Bassi’s world of Jewish morality and mercy. Handing our land to our sworn enemies was certainly an act of Jewish morality and mercy.

The expression, “He who is merciful to the wicked will be wicked to the merciful” is not just a biblical warning and prophecy .

Just ask Yonatan.

הערבים הצעירים קלטו היטב: מדינת ישראל = אויב העם היהודי

הם רואים דמוקרטיה מתאבדת: בעלי הבית החדשים של המדינה

מה אפשר לעשות מול הצעירים הערבים שמרגישים שמדינת ישראל מתפוררת מולם?

בשנים האחרונות אני רואה שינוי גדול בהתנהגות של חלקם במרחב הציבורי: נהגים ערבים צעירים נוהגים בפראות חסרת תקדים ובאלימות מופגנת, וזה לא עניין חדש: ביום כיפור לפני חמש עשרה שנה דרס נהג טרקטורון אסעד שיבלי בן 20 את הילדה טל זינו שהלכה ברחוב בכפר תבור, וביום כיפור לפני שנתיים נדרס הילד איתי מרגי בתל אביב על ידי סוחר הסמים אמיר אבו לבן מרמלה. מקרים אלו אינם היחידים שהסתיימו במוות כתוצאה של נהיגה פרועה ומסוכנת של צעירים ערבים.

צעירים ערבים הנוסעים באוטובוס וברכבת מדברים בטלפון הנייד, וזה עם זה, בקול גדול והרושם שהם יוצרים הוא שהם מתייחסים אל המרחב הציבורי כשייך להם. בשנים האחרונות רואים יותר ויותר הפגנות של ערבים ביום העצמאות עם דגלי פלסטין. זה התחיל ביישובים הערביים, עבר לערים המעורבות ובשנים האחרונות רואים הפגנות כאלה בתל אביב, בעיקר באוניברסיטת תל אביב. הצעירים המפגינים יודעים בדיוק מה משמעות הנפת הדגלים הללו – תקווה לחיסול מדינת היהודים – ואת המסר הזה בדיוק הם רוצים להעביר.

מנהל אתר בניה סיפר לי שבתקופה האחרונה פועלים ערבים מעלים דרישות חסרות תקדים ונעדרות היגיון על ימי חופשה ותנאי עבודה, וכשדרישותיהם אינן נענות הם מזיקים לבניין ולציוד העבודה. הדוגמאות לשינוי שחל בהתנהגות הצעירים הערביים הן רבות ומגוונות, ודי כאן אם נזכיר את התנהגות מאות מהם באירועי “שומר החומות” במאי 2021 בערים המעורבות: יפו, עכו ולוד.

הסיבות לשינוי הזה בהתנהגות הצעירים הן רבות; חלקן סיבות עומק וחלקן סיבות שעלו בתקופה האחרונה. סיבת העומק העיקרית היא השתחררות הצעירים הערביים מעכבות שאפיינו את הדורות הקודמים. בספרם “הדור הזקוף” שראה אור לפני עשרים שנה עומדים הסוציולוגים דני רבינוביץ’ וח’אולה אבו בקר על השינויים שחלו במגזר הערבי בישראל מאז 1948: הדור הראשון היה דור שפוף שחווה את תבוסת 1948, קרוביו מדרגה ראשונה הפכו לפליטים במדינות ערב והוא שרד תחת ממשל צבאי עד 1966. הדור השני החל להזדקף: נולד במסגרת מדינת ישראל, זכה לשירותי בריאות, חינוך ועבודה, למד עברית והשתלב בכלכלה. הדור השלישי, הזקוף, הולך בתחושה שמגיע לו להנות מהזכויות השוות – בלימודים, בעבודה, בשכר – שלימדו אותו עליהן בבית הספר ובאוניברסיטה. בנות הדור השלישי מורדות בהגמוניה הפטריארכלית של חברתן ויוצאות חוצץ נגד המאפיינים הלאומיים של מדינת היהודים. חברת הכנסת לשעבר חנין זועבי, היום בת 53, מייצגת נאמנה את בנות הדור הזקוף.

הצעירים הערבים של ימינו, הדור אחרי חנין זועבי, הם הדור המשתלט. הם מזהים מולם ציבור יהודי מסוכסך שאינו מסוגל להקים ממשלה מסודרת, מונהג בידי ראש ממשלה נהנתן שהפרקליטות תופרת לו תיקים, המוחלף על ידי ראש ממשלה שאיננו שולט בה, ציבור שכושר עמידתו מסורס פעם אחרי פעם על ידי מערכת המשפט, מפוחד על ידי אמצעי תקשורת מעוררי פניקה, שקוע ברדיפה אחרי הנאות החיים, מסלק מתוכנית הלימודים תכנים יהודיים וציוניים, תומך במפלגות שמאל שמחקו את הציונות ממצען, מצמצם את התנדבות בניו ליחידות קרביות ומחרים מבעלי הנשק בערים המעורבות את אקדחיהם המוחזקים ברישיון.

הצעיר הערבי רואה את הפעילות ההרסנית הענפה של עמותות “יהודיות” כמו יוזמות קרן אברהם, עיר עמים, עמק שווה, שוברים שתיקה, שלום עכשיו, רבנים למען זכויות אדם (כל עוד איננו יהודי כמובן), רופאים למען זכויות אדם (כנ”ל) ואחרות הממומנות על ידי קרנות כמו הקרן לישראל חדשה והוא מסיק מכך שהציבור היהודי וויתר על המדינה היהודית.

הצעיר הערבי רואה איך המדינה מאפשרת למדינות אירופה ולקרנות אמריקניות לתמוך במאות גופים אנטי ציוניים בישראל וביו”ש ואינה עושה דבר כדי לעצור את שטף הכסף הזה והוא מסיק את המסקנה היחידה: המדינה היהודית מתאבדת.

הסתמכות הממשלה על התנועה האסלאמית ומפלגתה בכנסת, רע”ם, היא גולת הכותרת של החולשה הציונית. כל ערבי בישראל יודע שמטרתה של התנועה האסלאמית היא לחסל את מדינת ישראל כמדינת העם היהודי, וישיבתה בכנסת נועדה להכשיר את עצמה בעיני הקהל היהודי ולאפשר לה לפעול כנגד מדינתו מתוך בית הנבחרים שלו, כאשר נבחריה של התנועה ופעולתם נגד המדינה חוסים תחת חסינות פרלמנטרית. התנועה האסלאמית לא יכלה לקוות להישג גדול מזה, וזאת בזכות טיפשותה של מערכת המשפט הישראלית שאיננה מבינה את מטרתה של התנועה האסלאמית ולכן התירה לה לרוץ לכנסת.

העובדה שמפלגת בל”ד בכנסת גם היא הוכחה לצעיר הערבי שהמדינה צועדת בגאון בדרכה אל האבדון, שכן גם מפלגה זו מצהירה מעל כל בימה אפשרית שמטרתה היא לשנות – כלומר לבטל – את האופי היהודי-ציוני של מדינת ישראל, ובכל זאת בג”ץ התיר לה כבר בשנת 1996 לרוץ לכנסת, לפעול נגד המדינה עם חסינות פרלמנטרית והענקת שכר לחבריה מקופת המדינה שאותה הם רוצים לחסל. צעיר ערבי שרואה את זה מסיק את המסקנה היחידה האפשרית, שמדינת ישראל היא דמוקרטיה מתאבדת, וכל מה שנותר לו זה לסייע לה להתאבד ולדחוף אותה אל האבדון.

הצעיר הערבי רואה שהמדינה מכשירה אלפי בתים לא חוקיים שבדווים בנו בנגב על אדמה שגזלו מהמדינה, ואף מחברת אותם לחשמל; הוא גם רואה איך המוסד לביטוח לאומי מממן משפחות פוליגמיות למרות שהן לא חוקיות; הוא רואה איך רבים מצעירי המגזר הערבי מחזיקים בנשק לא חוקי ומרעידים את בתי שכניהם בצרורות של ירי שמידי פעם מפיל חללים; הוא רואה איך משפחות הפשע סוחטות דמי חסות (פרוטקשן) מקבלנים ומחקלאים בלי שאף אחד נוקט צעדים רציניים נגדם; הוא רואה איך שהיהודים פוחדים ורועדים מחיזבאללה, מחמאס, מצעירי שיח’ ג’ראח, מהמוראביטון והמוראביטאת של אלאקצא; הוא רואה איך ישראל באיוולתה מאפשרת לערוץ הג’יהאד התקשורתי, אלג’זירה, לעבוד בחופשיות מתוכה ולהסית נגדה ללא הרף; מכל אלה הוא מסיק שהמדינה היהודית איבדה את דרכה והיא מתדרדרת בתהום ללא יכולת לעצור.

התקשורת החברתית, ובראשה קבוצות בווטסאפ, מעניקות לצעירים ערבים “תודעת יחד” המאחדת אותם זה עם זה, צפון עם דרום, בדווים עם פלאחים ובני עיר, צעירים בירושלים, ביו”ש, בעזה, בירדן, בלבנון, בסוריה ואיפה לא. תחושת היחד מעניקה עוצמה והרגשה שאף אחד לא יוכל לעצור אותנו כשאנחנו דוחפים את המדינה אל עברי פי פחת, בלי חשש ובלי מורא.

ומי יישאר כאן אחרי שהמדינה תתאבד? הוא וחבריו שיהפכו לבעלי הבית החדשים של הארץ ושל כל מה שהיהודים המתאבדים בנו בה. היהודים, “הצלבנים החדשים”, באו, עשו מה שעשו והם בדרך להיעלם כישות יהודית ומה שיהיה כאן זה מדינה ערבית עם ציבור יהודי מפוחד שיעשה את מה שאומרים לו לעשות. מכאן נובעת ההתנהגות האדנותית של הצעירים הערבים המחצינים את רגשותיהם ומבטאים אותם בביטחון עצמי גדל והולך ושהם כלל אינם מנסים להסתיר את המצב הנפשי הבוטח המפעם בקרבם.

אשליית השותפות

הממשלה הנוכחית ניסתה לשכנע אותנו שקואליציה בהשתתפות מפלגת רע”ם היא שותפות אמיתית עם המגזר הערבי ההופך באמצעות המפלגה הזו לשותף רציני ומלא בניהול המדינה. אלה מילים יפות, הנובעות מהאופן שבו הצד היהודי של הממשלה רואה – או ליתר דיוק: רוצה לראות – את פני הדברים.

הבעיה היא שבראייה המזרח תיכונית המצב שונה לחלוטין. במזרח התיכון, אם יש לך רכוש אתה לא מחפש שותפים, כי כאשר אתה הבעלים היחיד אז הרכוש שייך לך במלואו, על כל מאה האחוזים שלו. אם אתה מכניס שותף אתה מוותר על חלק מהרכוש ועכשיו אתה לא יכול לומר שהוא רק שלך. יותר מזה: אם יש לך מפעל ואינך יכול להפעיל אותו, אתה מחפש שותף שיסייע לך להפעילו. אלא שמיום שהשותף הגיע, נכנס לעבודה והעלה את המפעל על מסלול רווחי, המפעל שייך בפועל לו כי אתה לא הצלחת להפעילו ותחתיך הוא היה מחוסל, ואילו השותף הצליח להבריאו ולכן המפעל המצליח שייך לו.

הנמשל ברור: ממשלת ישראל הנוכחית לא יכלה לקום ולפעול בלי השותף האסלאמיסטי, והוא זה המאפשר לה לפעול ולשרוד. ומכיוון שהממשלה תלויה בו היא שייכת לו. כשצעיר ערבי רואה את הדברים הוא מבין שהממשלה עובדת אצל מפלגת רע”ם, וההוכחה עבורו היא התקציבים השמנים וחסרי התקדים שמפלגה זו הצליחה לסחוט מתקציב המדינה. ברור לכל מי שעיניו בראשו שתקציבים אלו יוזרמו – לפחות בחלקם – לאנשי שלומה של התנועה האסלאמית, אלה הפועלים יומם ולילה נגד מדינת ישראל, ריבונותה ושליטתה בירושלים בכלל ובהר הבית בפרט.

Miriam as Azuvah–Rejected: The Little-Known Story of How Miriam HaNeviah Found Her Shidduch

A truly caring friend makes sure to send me the Bitachon Weekly every week. Bursting with fascinating Torah ideas, it also gleans from a wealth of Navordok mussar.

I love it.

For Parshat Shemot, it mentions a little-known fact about Miriam HaNeviah (the Prophetess):

In contrast to the majority of other saintly personalities throughout the Torah, Moshe Rabbeinu’s famous big sister was not so good-looking.

And that’s putting it lightly.​

Rejected, Sickly, and Pale

Sotah 12a explains how Miriam was known by different names to reflect her unfortunate situation:

  • Yeriot (curtains)—because her face was extremely pale like yeriot.
  • Chelah (sickly)—because she was sickly.
  • Azuvah (rejected, abandoned)—because “everyone abandoned her” due to not wanting to marry her because of her sickly, unattractive appearance (!!!)

It’s hard to believe after everything she did for Am Yisrael, no one wanted to marry her due to her sickly, unattractive self.

Such wholesale rejection implies severe unattractiveness (but Chazal is too nice to come right out & say it. But the implication is definitely there).

Also, think of the tremendous slap-in-the-face against the concept of positive middah-k’neged-middah (measure-for-measure) this must have seemed.

After all, since her young girlhood, Miriam HaNeviah embodied the concept of unswerving loyalty.

She stood by the continuation of Am Yisrael by encouraging the fruitfulness of Am Yisrael under the sick decree of Pharaoh against the newborn boys of Yisrael.

She stood by her baby brother as he floated down the Nile.

Later, she risked her life as Puah to stand by Am Yisrael as a dedicated midwife, saving life after life.

She never abandoned one Jew, even at risk to her own life.

​So how was it that she herself was abandoned & rejected to such an extreme?

Also, while sickly is never an asset, it used to be worse before modern technology.

With so much of the most basic domestic duties demanding intensive labor (getting a fire going, digging up vegetables & washing them without running water, hand-washing laundry, cooking, childbirth, nursing, childcare, etc.) that challenged a healthy woman, how could a sickly woman possibly manage?

Sure, in the Midbar, bnei Yisrael enjoyed the luxury of manna & the Cloud Pillar (which did the laundry), but women still faced other demands.

And can you imagine being such an object of rejection that it becomes your name?

You know how people sarcastically say, “If you look up _____ in the dictionary, you’ll find my name under the definition”?

Well, for Miriam, it was literally true! Azuvah. Rejected. Abandoned. Unwanted.

Yet one man rose to the occasion: Kalev ben Yefuneh.

​Kalev married Miriam solely for her holy personality.

And because he married l’Shem Shamayim (for the sake of Heaven, for the purest motives), Kalev earned unique merits; Hashem rewarded him richly.

After marriage, Miriam’s appearance transformed into the opposite of what it had been.

Thus, she became known by new names:

  • Vardon (a type of rose)—because she developed a beautiful rose-like appearance
  • Na’arah (young woman)—because she became healthy & beautiful like the ideal young woman.

While her initial state of extended singlehood may not have seemed fair (after all, she was a savior of Am Yisrael—and saved Am Yisrael more than once!), it was her flaws that launched her into a marriage with one of the best men of the Nation.

Dear Senators:
I have tried to live by the rules my entire life. My father was a Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army, who died of combat related stresses shortly after his retirement. It was he who instilled in me those virtues he felt important – honesty, duty, patriotism and obeying the laws of God and of our various governments. I have served my country, paid my taxes, worked hard, volunteered and donated my fair share of money, time and artifacts.

Today, as I approach my 79th birthday, I am heart-broken when I look at my country and my government. I shall only point out a very few things abysmally wrong which you can multiply by a thousand fold. I have calculated that all the money I have paid in income taxes my entire life cannot even keep the Senate barbershop open for one year! Only Heaven and a few tight-lipped actuarial types know what the Senate dining room costs the taxpayers. So please, enjoy your haircuts and meals on us.

Last year, the president spent an estimated $1.4 billion on himself and his family. The vice president spends $ millions on hotels. They have had 8 vacations so far this year! And our House of Representatives and Senate have become America’s answer to the Saudi royal family. You have become the “perfumed princes and princesses” of our country.

In the middle of the night, you voted in the Affordable Health Care Act, a.k.a. “Obamacare,” a bill which no more than a handful of senators or representatives read more than several paragraphs, crammed it down our throats, and then promptly exempted yourselves from it substituting your own taxpayer-subsidized golden health care insurance. (Let’s eliminate that exemption and put the Congress under the Affordable Health Care Act)

You live exceedingly well, eat and drink as well as the “one percenters,” consistently vote yourselves perks and pay raises while making 3.5 times the average U.S. individual income, and give up nothing while you (as well as the president and veep) ask us to sacrifice due to sequestration (for which, of course, you plan to blame the Republicans, anyway).

You understand very well the only two rules you need to know – (1) How to get elected, and (2) How to get re-elected. And you do this with the aid of an eagerly willing and partisan press, speeches permeated with a certain economy of truth, and by buying the votes of the greedy, the ill-informed and under-educated citizens (and non-citizens, too, many of whom do vote ) who are looking for a handout rather than a job. Your so-called “safety net” has become a hammock for the lazy. And, what is it now, about 49 or 50 million on food stamps – pretty much all Democrat voters – and the program is absolutely rife with fraud and absolutely no congressional oversight?

I would offer that you are not entirely to blame. What changed you is the seductive environment of power in which you have immersed yourselves. It is the nature of both houses of Congress which requires you to subordinate your virtue in order to get anything done until you have achieved a leadership role. To paraphrase President Reagan, it appears that the second oldest profession (politics), bears a remarkably strong resemblance to the oldest.

As the hirsute first Baron John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton (1834 -1902), English historian and moralist, so aptly and accurately stated, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” I’m only guessing that this applies to the female sex as well. Tell me, is there a more corrupt entity in this country than Congress?

While we middle class people continue to struggle, our government becomes less and less transparent, more and more bureaucratic, and ever so much more dictatorial, using Czars and Secretaries to tell us (just to mention a very few) what kind of light bulbs we must purchase, how much soda or hamburgers we can eat, what cars we can drive, gasoline to use, and what health care we must buy. Countless thousands of pages of regulations strangle our businesses costing the consumer more and more every day.

As I face my final year, or so, with cancer, my president and my government tell me “You’ll just have to take a pill,” while you, Senator, your colleagues, the president, and other exulted government officials and their families will get the best possible health care on our tax dollars until you are called home by your Creator while also enjoying a retirement beyond my wildest dreams, which of course, you voted for yourselves and we pay for.

The chances of you reading this letter are practically zero as your staff will not pass it on, but with a little luck, a form letter response might be generated by them with an auto signature applied, hoping we will believe that you, our senator or representative, has heard us and actually cares. This letter will, however, go on line where many others will have the chance to read one person’s opinion, rightly or wrongly, about this government, its administration and its senators and representatives.

I only hope that occasionally you might quietly thank the taxpayer for all the generous entitlements which you have voted yourselves, for which, by law, we must pay, unless, of course, it just goes on the $19 trillion national debt for which your children and ours, and your grandchildren and ours, ad infinitum, must eventually try to pick up the tab.

My final thoughts are that it must take a person who has either lost his or her soul, or conscience, or both, to seek re-election and continue to destroy the country that I deeply love. You have put it so far in debt that we will never pay it off while your lot improves by the minute, because of your power.

For you, Senator, will never stand up to the rascals in your House who constantly deceive the American people. And that, my dear Senator, is how power has corrupted you and the entire Congress. The only answer to clean up this cesspool is term limits and replacing their retirement with the same Social Security plan the rest of us will receive (if they don’t put that program into bankruptcy) . This, of course, will kill the goose that lays your golden eggs. And woe be to him (or her) who would dare to bring it up.
